Salmon And Prion Disease Index
Hello Patients

Although wild salmon can be an important source of many nutrients, farmed salmon could become a serious health hazard due to the practice of feeding farmed salmon ground up salmon. This practice markedly increases the risk of prion disease making the risk uncomfortably high for my taste. Like many animals, salmon have been shown to carry prions, but as yet, they have not been proven to cause any human disease. Just as with domesticated land animals the balance of nutrients in farmed fish differs from wild and a debate is raging about the utilization of resources by fish farms. Should be an interesting discussion
I will return July 8. In my absence if you suffer any significant medical problems go to the nearest Emergency Room. My apologies for any inconvenience.
Best,
Michael Carlston, M.D.
