For many years I have advised patients about what to look for in a multiple vitamin mineral supplement. I have always been frustrated by the deficiencies in every available MVM. It became clear that if I wanted a MVM I could recommend (and take myself) without hesitation, I would have to have it made to my specifications.
That day is at hand. My new MVM contains reasonable levels of all of the nutrients I believe should be in a MVM. By reasonable, I mean a healthy amount but not too much. For example, there is no MVM I can find with as much vitamin D3 but I have kept the level of stomach-upsetting B vitamins lower than most MVM so as not to trouble even sensitive stomachs. B12 deficiency is a common problem, complicated by the fact that many bodies do not metabolize B12 well. So, my MVM contains the most highly absorbed form. Vitamin C is included in both water and fat soluble forms. All of the minerals are chelated so that your body can absorb them readily. Less well-known nutrients are in there as well – CoQ10, lutein, zeazathin, alpha lipoic acid and a variety of polyphenols. Vitamin E is there in its full spectrum, natural form including tocotrienols.
To make the MVM, I found a manufacturer with a long history of making vitamin supplements to the highest standards. That way we can be confident that what is on the label is in the bottle. As what is not in a vitamin is also important, I am happy to tell you that they are made without the most common allergens and use veggie capsules to eliminate the risk of prion (i.e., Mad Cow) disease.
